Ashburton, Devon
Ashburton is a small but much visited town on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of South Devon. If you're out and about exploring when you're on your large group holidays in this neck of the woods, stop for a mooch.
The town's origins go way back to Saxon times, but today it has something of a reputation for antiques, art galleries and one-off quirky shops; the overall quaintness is lovely - narrow streets, old buildings, a lot of undeniable charm. There are a few little tea shops and inns in the town, and a good bakers if you want something to eat; otherwise, pop into the Old Library for breakfast (first come first served), or Rafikis for a unique vibe and good vegetarian/vegan fare.
Just down the road are Buckfast Abbey and Buckfast Butteflies & Dartmoor Otter Sanctuary - book tickets online and tie it in with your visit to Ashburton.
