At The Chapel, Bruton, Somerset

Not just a very good restaurant, At The Chapel is also an artisan bakery and a winestore, housed in a gorgeous historic building with an 18th century chapel attached on the main street in Bruton. Out the back there’s a south facing terrace for the sunnier days, inside it’s wonderfully light and airy, with crips white walls, original floorboards and simple wooden furniture complimented by green velvet seating in front of the bar. Relaxed sophistication to a T.

The food focuses on simple seasonal ingredients sourced from local suppliers, and from respected Italian producers – think modern British classics with Mediterranean flair. The mains, or large plates, might be Chargrilled black garlic chicken breast with sweetcorn polenta and gremolata, Roasted monkfish with pancetta, Jerusalem artichokes and fig leaf oil, or an At The Chapel burger with smoked Godminster cheese, Dowdings cider & onion jam, smoked bacon and fries. There’s also a choice of sourdough pizzas from the wood-fired oven, or on Sundays, an excellent roast.

The Bakery is amazing, with breakfast pastries, savouries, breads, cakes and biscuits; the Wine Store has a carefully selected range of natural, organic and biodynamic wines from small producers around the world.

Open all day, every day for breakfast lunch and dinner, south facing terrace at the back
