Badgers Tea House, Alfriston, Polegate, East Sussex
What a lovely find Badgers Tea House in Alfriston is! Housed in what for 200 years or more was the village bakery, this is just how a tea room should be, all quaint and cosy, with bumpy painted walls, a brick tiled floor and lots of original features. The vintage furniture and accessories, the floral tablecloths, it’s all so perfectly in place, made even better by the fine bone china cups and plates, the pretty cake stands and silver teapots. Sit in the tearoom or if it’s sunny, in the walled garden, lush with flowers in the spring and summer.
The menu isn’t that big, but there’s certainly enough to tempt you; a pancetta sandwich, sauteed mushrooms or cheese on toast, a hashbrown stack, but what you really ought to do is have cake, of course – if you can make your mind up what to have. There’ll be things like coffee cake, carrot cake, Victoria sponge and elderflower and gooseberry cake, all homemade, all to be eaten slowly and savoured.
And then there’s the cream teas; delicious homemade scones, fruity jam and clotted cream…
