Bath Place, Taunton, Somerset
Bath Place is one of the loveliest (if not THE loveliest) parts of Taunton so if you’re visiting Somerset’s county town when you’re on your large group holiday in the West Country, stroll down the alleyway off the high street and down through this narrow historic street. The air is relaxed and most of the terraced shops that run along one side of the street are small and independently run; several still have their original Georgian frontage with glazed fanlights. On the other side there are town houses and cottages with peeks into their charming gardens. In the summer it looks extra gorgeous, when the street is strung with colourful bunting and yarnbombing.
It’s surprising what you can find here – there’s a very good fish shop, a South African deli, one of the first hippy shops outside of London, a country market, a crystal shop, comic and games, and an independent bookshop that’s been there for over 40 years! If you’ve time, call into the Tea Room for coffee and cake.
