Bigbury on Sea, Kingsbridge, Devon
On the glorious South Devon coast, Bigbury on Sea has an immense pull for families with its long golden sands backed by the rolling hills of the South Hams, and its shallow waters. Choose your spot on the beach, set up camp, make sandcastles and go for a paddle. At low tide take your nets and buckets and head off to explore the rockpools; the more adventurous can hit the waves kite surfing and windsurfing – there are hire facilities right on the beach.
Something else you can do when the tide is out is walk across the causeway to Burgh Island, where there’s a famous Art Deco hotel that was the inspiration behind two of Agatha Christie’s novels. When the tide is out you can get across to the island by sea tractor, a very unique way to travel.
A trip to Bigbury on Sea makes for such a great day out on the beach because everything you need is right here; there’s parking, a food kiosk, a café, toilets, showers and lifeguards from May to September. All to hand, peace of mind.
