Bowerchalke, Salisbury, Wiltshire
Bowerchalke near Salisbury has the claim to fame of being the most haunted village in Wiltshire; allegedly the ghost of a very benevolent old woman comforts children when they’re poorly, a besmocked shepherd wanders the hills to the south of the village moaning ‘I want to go home’, and the ghost of a young girl has been seen sitting by the crossroads near the village. Whilst that might induce the heebie-jeebies, don't let it stop you coming here when you're out and about exploring on your large group holiday in Wiltshire, because like a lot of villages in these parts, it's so quintessentially pretty; there's no school, no shop, no pub, but being in the beautiful Chalke Valley, it's good walking country.
Bowerchalke's other renown is that nobel prize-winning author William Golding, who wrote Lord of the Flies, is buried in the churchyard.
