Buckingham Palace, London

Everyone knows about Buckingham Palace. It’s the Queen’s official London residence of course, it’s where the royal family wave to the crowds from the balcony on significant occasions, and it’s where you can see the famous Changing the Guard ceremony.

You can also visit the opulent state rooms when they’re open to visitors, which is for just 10 weeks each summer, but, wow, what an opportunity and its certainly something to show off about – to say you’ve been in the Queen’s house! See the elegant White Drawing Room, the magnificent Throne Room and the splendid Ballroom; hope for a sunny day as part of the tour takes you through the palace garden. Make sure you pre-book and allow 2.5 hours for your visit.

If you want to see the Changing the Guard, weather permitting it’s everyday in the summer at 11.00am, and the same time the rest of the year on Mon, Wes, Fri and Sat. What happens is that one regiment takes over from another, with the New Guard marching from Wellington Barracks to Buckingham Palace to musical accompaniment. One of England’s great traditions.
