Caldicot Castle and Country Park, Caldicot, Monmouthshire

The creeper clad ruins of Caldicot Castle stand in peaceful gardens surrounded by a 55 acre wooded country park on the edge of Caldicot. Founded by the Normans, used as a stronghold in the Middle Ages and later restored as a Victorian family home, the castle has a rich and colourful history. Find out all about it as you travel through its timeline, exploring from the dark dungeons to the medieval towers; don’t be surprised if you get the heebie-jeebies – the castle is said to be haunted by several ghosts, including grey ladies and monks. If it all gets too much and you find yourself in need of fresh air, go to the battlements where the views of the parkland and the Monmouthshire countryside are spectacular.

The little ones will have enormous fun running about in the castle grounds; there’s a play area and an Activity Station where they can play games, solve puzzles, identify trees, and make a castle to take home. Take a stroll in the country park where the River Nedern winds its way along, hire bikes and set off to find a good spot for a picnic, or head back to the castle tea room and tuck into a big fat slice of cake.
