Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

Not that long ago Charlton Kings was a village, only a very short drive from the middle of Cheltenham; these days it’s more of a suburb, although it retains a peaceful villagey feel and has a strong sense of community. It’s a lovely place to stay for your large group holiday in the UK, nice and relaxed with a good range of local shops – butchers, grocers, florists, homewares, and a bakery that does the most amazing sourdough. In a way it feels quite cosmopolitan, a little European, people contentedly browsing about, sitting outside the cafes in the sunshine, that kind of vibe.

The balance of town and country is good – Charlton Kings is within the Cotswold National Landscape so on the doorstep there’s beautiful countryside with local walks around Dowdeswell Reservoir, through Lineover Woods, or up to Wistley Hill Nature Reserve.

Cheltenham might have a huge choice of places to eat, but if you’re staying in Charlton Kings there are good cafes, pubs and restaurants within a short saunter; pop out and grab something tasty from the deli, stop by for a coffee, go for lunch or dinner at The Royal or The Langton, have cocktails at Sixways.

You can take a guided tour of Siblings Gin Distillery or Dunkertons Organic Cider, pootle over to Cheltenham Racecourse for the thrills and spills of a race day, or come in March when it’s Cheltenham Festival time and get dressed up to the nines for Style Wednesday. Then of course, there’s everything Cheltenham has to offer just a short drive away…
