Clifton Down, Bristol, Somerset

Clifton Down forms part of The Downs in Bristol, a vast open space north of the city centre, that’s been used by locals and visitors for leisure and recreation since Victorian times, and is protected from urban sprawl. If you want to escape the bustle of the shops and busy streets, this is a good place to head for.

You might see people kite flying, picnicking, even horse riding – and walking. This is a popular spot for a stroll, with several downloadable routes and seasonal family trails on the Bristol Government website. Wander over to The Gully, where wild goats feed, amble through the woodlands, explore the Iron Age hillfort at Clifton Down Camp. What’s rather fascinating is a visit to Clifton Observatory – go down to the Giants Cave up to the tower where there’s a Camera Obscura giving 360 degree views of the city.

Clifton Down, and Observatory Hill in particular, is the best place in Bristol for views of Clifton Suspension Bridge and Avon Gorge. It’s also a good spot for watching the hot air balloons rising when the annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is on at Ashton Court.
