Community Waffle House, Axminster, Devon
You don’t necessarily need a sweet tooth to like the kind of food they serve at The Community Waffle House in Axminster. They make their own Liege and Belgian waffles every day from scratch and use them very creatively in both sweet and savoury dishes; they’ve reinvented the waffle.
So go along early and fill your belly with a waffle breakfast; perhaps The Lighter One (grilled halloumi, avocado and roasted red peppers) or The American One (rashers of bacon, lashings of maple syrup). If you go at lunchtime have a Savoury Waffle, maybe The Grown Up One (smoked salmon and cream cheese) or The Cowboy One (Southern fried chicken breast, slow pulled pork, coleslaw, cheese and bbq sauce). Then there’s the Sweet Ones. The. Sweet. Ones. Where to start? The Rocky One? (honeycomb ice-cream, Maltesers, marshmallows and Belgian chocolate)? The Heavenly One (vanilla ice-cream, raspberries and Belgian white chocolate)? The Classy One (pecans, maple syrup and vanilla ice-cream)? It’s a tough choice when they’re all so tempting!
The setting is nice and light and airy, on the top floor of a re-developed department store in the middle of town; look down and watch the shoppers bustling about in the market, see the leaves of the trees dancing in the breeze. There’s a play area with a sensory tipi and an extensive collection of board games, it’s just a great place to hang out. They’re a very friendly bunch here and the Community Waffle House is 100% non profit, just a team of trusty volunteers working together to do whatever they can to bring smiles to faces and bring people together, they don’t want anyone to be lonely you see, because they care, and that’s good.
