Dinnington Docks, Hinton St George, Somerset
Dinnington Docks, known locally as ‘The Docks’, is out in the sticks a few miles from Hinton St George in Somerset, and if you stumbled across it when you were out pootling about the lanes, it would be serendipitous. If you set out to find it, it’s well worth the drive because it’s what you'd call a proper country pub and it's nothing short of lovely.
You'll be welcomed with a smile, so find yourself a table and sit down and enjoy a pint of local brew by the fire, or if the sun is shining go and sit in the beer garden out the back, listen to the birds chirruping, fill your lungs with fresh country air.
The food is pub favourites, all home made and very tasty; Local sausages and mash, Honey roast ham, egg and chips, Homemade steak burger, Braised shin of beef cottage pie, Moroccan spiced tagine, that kind of thing. At lunchtimes there’s a choice of baguettes and an excellent Somerset rarebit, on Sundays the bar is full of folk who’ve come to tuck into a jolly good roast. Service is very attentive, but most of all, it's just such a relaxing place, which is exactly how it should be. Go, but make sure you book ahead.
