Double Locks, Exeter, Devon
People arrive at the Double Locks on the outskirts of Exeter by all methods of transport – on foot, car of course, by bike, kayak and canoe. Doesn’t that sound lovely? Can’t you just imagine, a beautiful summers evening, paddling along the calm waters of the Exeter Ship Canal to the pub?
Whatever way you get there, you’ll find a nice smiley welcome at the Double Locks, and that’s extended to your four legged friends. Food is good, all freshly made, home cooked and the menu changes with the seasons which is just how it ought to be; it’s pub grub with a modern twist – their own Double Lock’s Burger with cheese, fried onions, shredded lettuce, pickles and chips, Pork & apple sausages with crushed Jersey Royals, purple sprouting broccoli and gravy, and for the vegans, Pea, broad bean and wild garlic risotto. They serve a mighty good choice of drinks too, with particular attention given to ciders because they love them – so much so that they have a Cider & Sausage Festival every August Bank Holiday. Take a pint outside and sit at the water’s edge; it’s all very relaxing, just the kind of thing you should be doing on your holidays in the West Country.
