Duchess of Cocklemoor, Langport, Somerset
Oh the joy, the joy of a leisurely boat trip, in this case on board the Duchess of Cocklemoor, drifting slowly along the River Parrett… moorhens scooting at the water’s edge, swans gliding by, a heron taking flight, maybe even the brilliant turquoise flash of a kingfisher or the plop of a water vole slipping into the river. Leaving from Langport, the trips take you slowly along through the achingly beautiful countryside of the Somerset Levels. On a perfect day when the sun is shining it’ll feel like life is indeed but a dream.
The Duchess of Cocklemoor is a community boat, supported by a charity, dependant on voluntary donations. Built in 1908, once used to ferry passengers across the River Dart from Teignmouth to Shaldon in Devon, she’s since been lovingly restored and is now powered by solar energy –good for the world and quieter than most boat engines.
The Duchess operates every day, weather permitting, from spring to autumn with trips usually taking about an hour. They do private charter for groups of up to 12 people and can arrange bird watching, wildlife and history tours. A lovely thing to do when you're staying nearby on your large group holiday in Somerset.
