Dunkeswell Aerodrome, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon

High up on the Blackdown Hills with staggering views across the landscape, Dunkeswell Aerodrome is the home of Devon & Somerset Flight Training, so people come here for flying lessons and experiences, or just to watch the planes come and go and parachutists landing.

It’s not a bad way to while away an hour or two, but wrap up warm because this former WW2 US Naval base is 839 feet above sea level and the old wind doesn’t half blow up here. If you want to know more about the history, go to the Heritage Centre, if you fancy something to eat, head for the Aviator Coffee Bar & Restaurant too because everyone says it’s good; it’s open 7 days a week for hot and cold food and beverages, or you can have a pint of local brew at the bar.

Flight experiences can be booked in advance for birthdays and occasions or just because. Flights are 30-60 minutes in 2 or 4 seater aircraft, with several packages available.
