Dyrham Park, Dyrham, near Bath
At the heart of Dyrham Park, not far from Bath, is a magnificent 17th century country mansion with one of the most impressive Baroque interiors in the country. The setting for this glorious house is 270 acres of picturesque parkland where fallow deer roam free.
In the house you can see an extensive collection of Dutch Delftware, furniture, ceramics and art, and discover a typical Victorian kitchen. Ongoing work in the gardens will result in a 21st century garden with strong echoes of the past. Picnics are encouraged here as there are so many idyllic spots for you to spread your rug and unpack your hamper and you could quite easily idle away a couple of hours like that on a warm day. Children can let off steam in the play area, and in the holidays there are family activities to join in, like wild cooking, den building and kite making. They even have open air theatre which is a real treat on a balmy evening.
Walk in the wildflower meadow, browse the second hand bookshop and have a bite to eat in the tea room with its own little garden and courtyard. A lovely day out when you're on your large group holiday in Somerset.
Opening hours vary throughout the year so check the website or call before setting out.
