Ebbor Gorge, Wookey Hole, Wells, Somerset

Just a mile from Wookey Hole in the Mendip Hills Natural Landscape, Ebbor Gorge is a good place to explore if you want to connect with the great outdoors when you’re on your large group holiday in Somerset. This designated National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest was formed over 200,000 years ago following the collapse of a huge limestone cavern. There are grasslands, woodland, rocks and caves, and plenty of nature spotting opportunities, with rare butterflies among the recorded count. The caves provide roosts for greater and lesser horseshoe bats.

The free car park (locked at dusk) has an information board showing the three marked trails, one of which is suitable for buggies and wheelchairs; let the little ones go feral splashing in the streams and clambering over the fallen trees. It’s a good old slog up to the top of the gorge but you’ll be well rewarded with staggering views across the Somerset Levels and Glastonbury Tor – and it’s a brilliant spot for a picnic. If you fancy a longer hike, there’s a good 4 mile circular to Wookey Hole and back, or you can walk to Priddy and stop for lunch at The Queen Victoria Inn.
