Fifield Bavant, Salisbury, Wiltshire
Sometimes, when you're on your large group holidays in the UK, it's good to get out and discover the local area, either pootling round the lanes by car, cycling, or, if you've got your walking boots, on foot. That way you find the out of the way places, the hidden gems - like Fifield Bavant, midway between Ebbesbourne Wake and Broad Chalke in the breathtakingly beautiful Chalke Valley.
It’s a tiny village, the smallest in the whole of Wiltshire, with only about a dozen houses, but how quiet it is, and how pretty, especially the little row of thatched cottages, and the church, set on a hillside, reached via a farmyard. It’s worth a wander, if you like looking at old churches; this one dates back to medieval times and is the smallest in the county and second smallest in England. For one that’s so remote, it’s surprisingly lovely inside – simple, but lovely.
There’s no shop and no pub in Fifield Bavant, but you can set off on a jolly good walk to Ebbesbourne Wake from here and go to The Horseshoe Inn.
