Filleigh, Barnstaple, Devon
Filleigh is a small village on the southern edge of Exmoor National Park, and just over 3 miles from the busy little town of South Molton in North Devon. It’s one of those quiet villages where everyone just goes about their days and all seems to trip along nicely; cricket club, community events at the village hall, primary school, and a whitewashed and thatched pub called The Stags Head Inn, which stands beside a lake. The church is well worth a gander, Neo-Norman style, it wouldn’t be out of place in a French village.
Most people would agree that Filleigh is a pretty looking place, but then that’s to be expected really as much of it lies within the historic Castle Hill estate, where you can visit the gardens and see the temples and follies set in a quite enchanting 18th century landscape. At the heart of the estate is a magnificent Palladian mansion house; up on the hill behind it is a sham castle, one of the landmarks in this part of the world.
