Fitzhead, Somerset
Fitzhead is a peaceful Somerset just over 3 miles from Wiviliscombe and 6 miles from the county town of Taunton. People, live here happily, loving the tranquillity in their farms or cottages, most of which are built of the local red sandstone. Stroll around and see what takes your interest – if you like history there's a14th century Tithe Barn on the corner of the churchyard, now used as a parish hall, and a schoolhouse dating back to Victorian times. Even the bus shelter is lovely, with its brick floor and pews to sit on, and the staggering views out over the fields to the Quantock Hills.
What’s nice is the strong sense of community at Fitzhead – there’s a very good fete every year, as well as regular events like a duck race, coffee mornings and markets. In the winter, when it snows, the villagers go sledging on the hills, in the summer they paddle in the stream that runs through the lower part of the village. It’s a lovely way to live and if it wasn’t for the cars you could easily think you'd stepped back in time a little.
The other thing about Fitzhead is that it’s excellent walking country, with quiet narrow lanes and a network of footpaths taking you across the fields, through woodlands and over the hills. Refreshments of some kind are always well deserved after a good walk, but you won’t find any here – there is a pub, the Fitzhead Inn, but last we heard was that it’s not open to the public as it’s for exclusive rental only. Best to pootle down to Halse, to The New Inn.
