Great Torrington Heritage Museum, Great Torrington, Devon
You’ll find Great Torrington Heritage Museum right next to the Pannier Market in the middle of town, and small as it may be it’s got a surprising amount of information. Go there to find out everything there is to know about the history of Great Torrington, chiefly the huge part the town played in the English Civil War and how the battle of Torrington marked the end of Royalist resistance – it’s not known as ‘The Cavalier Town’ for nothing.
You’ll discover the Neolithic settlements that existed in this part of North Devon thousands of years ago, about the trades the town was largely founded upon (there’s a big focus on glove making), the Rolle canal, the working farms in the area and the pottery that was made here. A visit to the Great Torrington Heritage Museum is an intriguing insight into the social and natural history of this peaceful Devon town; it shows how all such places have their links to the past, they all have their stories.
