Guildford Cathedral, Guildford, Surrey

Guildford Cathedral is remarkable in that it’s one of only a few modern cathedrals in the UK, in this case, built between 1936 and 1961. Like it or not, it is actually a stunning example of how Gothic traditions and 20th century building techniques can be melded together with the right foresight, imagination and know-how.

The more you look at it, the more incredible it is; the hilltop setting has views that stretch across the town and beyond, and when the sunsets on those red bricks it really is quite a spectacle. Go and have a look around, see for yourself, the chances are you’ll be very pleasantly surprised; you can take a guided tour or a tower tour, there’s a children’s quiz, a café where you can have homemade cake and tea, or don’t do anything other than sit and enjoy the stillness, the peace.
