Hailes Abbey, Hailes, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

There’s something very enchanting about that setting; come here and you’ll feel such an immense sense of tranquility, so if the sun is shining, bring a picnic and linger.
The abbey was a monastery and home to a small community of monks until the reformation in 1539. In the museum an audio guide tells you how they lived and slept, and what they ate. Next to the abbey there’s a small country chapel with medieval wall paintings of saints, coats of arms and hunting scenes – well worth a look as you’re here.
