Hares Barton - Accommodation

Just a few miles from the Jurassic Coast and the historic fishing village of Beer, Hares Barton has a peaceful location on the edge of a sleepy hamlet, surrounded by the rolling hills of East Devon. This is a house of two parts – a 300 year old former dairy is the main house and right opposite, a hay barn is now the spa hall, both beautifully converted to bring you exceptional group holiday accommodation for 20+2, with a pool, hot tub, sauna and a games room.

Enter the main house through a light and airy hallway; to the right there’s a utility room with laundry facilities, convenient for wet coats and dogs when you’ve been for a walk in the fields. Go through to the vast open-plan living space and straightaway you’ll start to get the uniqueness of this place. A polished concrete floor, original stone and brick walls, exposed steel supports and chunky timbers come together with colourful and quirky interiors to create the perfect blend of contemporary, rustic and industrial. There’s underfloor heating, and for extra warmth on colder days, a double-sided wood-burner provides a well-considered partition in the middle of the room.

To one end is soft seating, in the middle there’s a bespoke rustic dining table and beyond is the kitchen, where naked wood cladding gives a parred back look and the island is inlaid with 2p pieces; all are heads up except for 3 – but can you find them? The kitchen is well equipped for large group catering, but if you’re here for a family celebration, you might like to book a private caterer to come and cook a feast for you (see Extras).

Off the dining area are Bedrooms 1-3; Bedroom 1 has an ensuite bathroom with an overhead shower, Bedrooms 2 and 3 have ensuite shower rooms. Bedroom 3 has room for an extra guest bed (charged) and these rooms, like all the bedrooms at Hares Barton, have zip and link beds that can be arranged as super kings or twins.

From the far end of the kitchen a secret door leads to Bedrooms 4-6. Bedrooms 4 and 5 have ensuite shower rooms, Bedroom 6 has a bathroom right opposite with a modern slipper bath. Bedroom 4 is another one with room for an extra guest bed. Bedroom 7 is just inside the secret door on the left and like the entire ground floor of the main house, is access friendly with an ensuite wet room.

Opposite the main house is the spa hall, entered via a lobby with stairs off to the right and a hallway straight ahead. Off the hall there’s a WC and changing room, and the star of the show – the spa hall. The pool is 8.5m x 5m with room for loungers to one side; in the corner of the room there’s a hot tub, light pours in through the full height windows.

Next to the hall is the games room with windows overlooking the pool. The games room has a pool table, table tennis, comfy seating, a large TV and a kitchenette. Upstairs are Bedrooms 8-10; 8 and 9 have ensuite shower rooms, Bedroom 10 has a bath with an overhead shower.

Just outside of the spa hall there’s a barrel sauna and in the garden at the front of the main house there’s garden furniture and a barbecue area. When you’re all out there together on a beautiful blue-sky day it feels like the best place in the world, with the softly rolling hills before you and the air full of birdsong. And when the sun slips gently below the horizon and you’re sat there, drink in hand, you’ll understand why Hares Barton is such a special place to stay.
