High Ham, Nr Langport, Somerset

A quiet and picturesque village on the edge of the Somerset Levels, where life just goes slowly by; no shops, no pub, just centuries old Blue Lias cottages with stalls outside selling eggs and honey, and a pretty church, but it's so charming. Eastfield Nature Reserve is within the parish and you really should go there because it has to be the most perfect spot for miles; you can sit on the grass, watch butterflies flitting about, and enjoy the most spectacular views that stretch right across to the Quantock Hills. Just across the road is Stembridge Mill, Britain’s only thatched windmill (NT), so go there as well, and to nearby Turn Hill, another local beauty spot.

Every summer the village has a Steam Fair where the atmosphere is very convivial, with a craft tent, food stalls and a bar, and the bizarre West Country sport of tractor pulling that you have to see to believe.
