Hope and Anchor, Hope Cove, Kingsbridge, Devon
Set in the heart of the picturesque coastal village of Hope Cove in Devon just a stone’s throw from the beach, the Hope and Anchor is one of those cosy pubs where it’s just as nice to get together for a roast on a blustery winter’s day as it is to sit outside in the sunshine in summer.
Inside is nicely done; a palette of pale blues and creams to reflect the coastal setting, mismatched chairs and tables and a wood-burner to keep you toasty in the colder months. On warmer days you can sit out on the terrace or find a table at the front of the pub and watch the comings and goings. Either way, the atmosphere is laid back and it feels good to be a part of it.
Food is good, with mains like Lamb shank Served on pearl barley, smoked bacon, silverskin onion and rosemary in a red wine & rosemary sauce, with sautéed chestnut mushrooms and kale, and Pumpkin and sage ravioli with brown butter, capers, sage, rocket, and grated parmesan, as well as pub classics – Fish and chips, 6oz West Country beefburger, and West Country 8oz sirloin steak. At lunchtimes there’s a good choice of wraps and sandwiches served with Burts salted crisps and dressed salad garnish. On Sunday it’s traditional roasts of beef, pork or chicken, or vegetarian options of Brie, cranberry and mushroom Wellington and Apricot and chestnut roast.
Dogs are welcome as long as they’re well behaved and kept on leads.
