Hopewell Colliery, Coleford, Gloucestershire
Freemining is an ancient tradition that has long been a unique way of life in the Forest of Dean and at this colliery you can take an underground tour of the tunnels, emerging in the beautiful woodland. You’ll need sturdy footwear and warm clothes, and you’ll be kitted out with a miner’s lamp and helmet. They’ll take group bookings by arrangement, but note that tours are not suitable for the under 3’s or for those with limited mobility. When you’ve finished your tour you can find out more about freemining in the museum, and then go to the Café for a cup of tea and cake, or a hot meal.
