Matt’s Kitchen, Bruton, Somerset

Matt’s Kitchen on the high street in Bruton is run by Matt Wilson, who’s been satisfying palates since he opened here in 2010. It’s all lovely and simple – Matt isn’t a qualified chef, he’s completely self-taught, but it’s crystal clear that he has an enormous passion for food and knows what tastes good and what flavours work together. What he’s done has turned the downstairs of his home into a restaurant, not a big one (it seats a maximum of 22) but a very successful one that is fully booked every night, often for months ahead.  The thing is, Matt’s got it all spot on; the ambience in his blue and gold restaurant is perfect, the service is kind and friendly, and the food is divine.

The food makes the most of what’s available in the local area; Matt is big on seasonal, fresh and home grown, or as near to as possible. The menu is a set monthly one, that way Matt knows exactly how much he has to cook and there’s little or no waste, so it helps to keep the prices down. To give you an idea of the type of thing you can expect, a late spring menu includes Moroccan lamb & pine nut patty with mint salsa on the starters, and mains of Pork shoulder, slow cooked in cider & fennel, garlic crumbs, crushed potatoes, tarragon, crème fraiche & lemon. Which sounds amazing.

Take your own booze/soft drinks and save the coffee for when you get home – Matt’s kitchen is only small and he just doesn’t have the room.
