Milverton, Somerset
Milverton lies just 5 miles from the Somerset County town of Taunton and is a large and very attractive village, largely founded on the flourishing wool trade over 300 years ago. The streets are lined with graceful Georgian houses and pretty thatched cottages; the community is big, with several clubs and events throughout the year. There’s a grocery shop, a post office, hairdressers and a very good pub, The Globe. Regular events include a Fair Trade Café every Wednesday in the Methodist Church rooms, where you can enjoy a slice of homemade cake with your brew, and the first Saturday of each month sees a Community Market in the Victoria Rooms; it’s a good atmosphere, with stalls selling local produce, homemade goodies, collectables and books. The village really comes alive on the first Bank Holiday in May with the fun and high spirits of Milverton Street Fair; there’s plenty going on – live music, street theatre, Punch & Judy shows, Morris dancing, stilt walkers, and over 100 stalls selling almost everything you can think of, including hot foods and drinks. If you’re staying at a Sleeps12 large group holiday home nearby don’t miss this vibrant event.
