North Curry, Somerset

If you're planning a walk along the River Tone on the Somerset Levels, it's worth including a visit to North Curry; have lunch or refreshments at the Bird in Hand and then take a little wander round the village. Essentially it's one long street with a square in the middle where a memorial to Queen Victoria is known locally as 'the pepperpot'. The village has some rather beautiful architecture; fine looking houses and the church is unusual in that it has an octagonal central tower; when you see it rising from the flat Levels you can understand why it's referred to as 'the cathedral of the moors'. If you need provisions there's a lovely little shop right opposite the pub.
