Old Wardour Castle, near Salisbury, Wiltshire
Not far from Salisbury, these 14th century ruins are right beside a lake; a charming and tranquil spot for an afternoon out for families, friends and corporate groups; if you like history you’ll like this. Old Wardour Castle was built as a fortified and lavish home but it was battered in the Civil War. Go and see what’s left of the Great Hall and Parlour, the Buttery and the Kitchen; climb the stone steps of the East Tower and admire the views. Then find the Gothic Banqueting House overlooking the lake and venture into the woods to discover the 18th century grotto. Utterly romantic.
There’s a gift shop and vending machine, loos and free parking, and dogs on lead are most welcome.
