Otterton, Budleigh Salterton, Devon
Otterton is one of those lovely Devon villages that manages to combine a good sense of community with charm and history; go there and you’ll find it’s all very pretty, with a picturesque village green and quintessential white washed thatched cottages. There’s a very nice pub, The Kings Arms, and on the banks of the River Otter, one of the oldest working water mills in the country - Otterton Mill, where you can see flour being ground, browse the art gallery and gift shop, and have a bite to eat in the café.
The backdrop of the softly rolling hills of the Otter Valley is wonderful and it makes Otterton such a perfect place to be; it’s one of those villages where it’s nice to pull up and stretch your legs with a stroll along the river, or if you fancy a decent walk you can go up over the cliffs to Ladram Bay where towering stacks of red sandstone stand as if on sentry in the sea.
Nearby there are good beaches at Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and Exmouth; plan it well and make a day of it, a bite to eat, a visit to the mill, a trip to the seaside.
