RHS Garden Rosemoor, Torrington, Devon
A visit to RHS Garden Rosemoor isn't just something for the garden aficianados, let's make that clear. It's a good day out for all - even the younger folk as there are play areas and seasonal trails, and of course, plenty of room for letting off steam. There are things to spot, like the lion in The Stone Garden and the runner bean wigwams in The Fruit & Vegetable Garden.
Of course, the appeal to plant lovers is immense, immeasurable, and RHS Garden Rosemoor is such a joy to walk around, whatever time of year it is. The site covers 65 acres - so comfortable shoes are a must; the setting, in a steep steep wooded valley in North Devon is glorious. There are meadows and woodlands, arboretums, and oh, the South & West Devon Orchards where rare and local apples are grown and in the springtime the trees are billowing with blossom. Central to the gardens are the150 metre Long Borders, a wonderful display of colour with beds separated by elegant clipped yew pillars.
Off The Long Borders are a series of garden rooms, all quite naturally flowing into the next, and what a delight! An absolute feast for the senses awaits you with surprises all the time; take your time to wander through The Cherry Garden, The Rose Gardens, The Woodland Garden, carpeted with bluebells and primroses in the spring, ablaze with rhododendron and camellia in early summer. See the intensity of colour in The Hot Garden, fiery yellows, reds and oranges, stroll around the lake in The Upper Bog Garden with its huge gunneras, listen to the waterfall cascading down over the Rock Gullies, soak up the quiet ambience of The Mediterranean Garden and the gorgeousness of The Potager and Cottage Garden where vegetables and old fashioned flowers make a merry throng, there are grape vines, willow hurdles and a backdrop of a thatched summerhouse. All of it is so utterly inspiring whether you're a beginner to gardening or a dab hand. Go and reflect over a bun and a cup of tea in the cafe or lunch in the restaurant, a lovely way to round off your trip.
