Royal North Devon Golf Club, Northam, Bideford, Devon
The Royal North Devon Golf Club (also known as Westward Ho!) is the oldest links course in England, founded in 1864 and is often regarded as the St Andrews of the South. The 18 hole par 72 course is played on mostly flat common land over 170 acres within the Northam Burrows Country Park and is well maintained, though it’s a very natural course that’s not without its challenges, including the presence of sheep and ponies – in fact, there’s a local rule that if your ball lands in a hoof mark you may without penalty!
There are a few holes where it’s easy to tee off in the wrong direction if you don’t know the course so buying a yardage book is a good idea. End your game a with a cream tea in the club house restaurant – the views are incredible.
