Severn Valley Railway, Kidderminster, Worcestershire
Here's a nice thing for a family day out on your group holidays in Worcestershire; go to the station at Kidderminster where the Severn Valley Railway starts and board a proper job old steam train for a pootle through the spectacular landscape along the route of the River Severn. Get on and off at whichever of the towns and villages you fancy along the way, have a mooch about, a pub lunch, a picnic, a stroll around the Severn Valley Country Park, whatever takes you.
The railway operates special events throughout the year, and they offer Dining Experiences and a Footplate Experience, which makes a brilliant birthday or anniversary present for some lucky train enthusiast who can take the driving seat, swing the shovel and stoke the fire. Something else that makes for a special celebration is to hire one of the luxurious Observation Saloons for afternoon tea - just imagine, get your glad rags on, vintage music, scones and tea...Lovely.
