Somerset Space Walk, North Newton, Nr Bridgwater, Somerset
The Somerset Space Walk is a sculpture trail featuring models of the solar system that runs along the towpath of the Bridgwater to Taunton Canal. What’s really cool is that it shows the sun and the planets in their correct sizes and distances apart, all in proportion of course. This is a good walk for families to do as you can all learn something together, and there’s a bit of fun thrown in, like when you get to Earth, there’s a geochache to find nearby; of course you can walk as far as you like – the entire path runs for 14 miles so that might be a bit too much for little legs, but do as much as you can because it’s such a lovely setting for one thing. The Somerset Space Walk starts midway along the canal at Maunsel Lock where there’s a canal centre and tea room; you really must make time for tea and cake – it’s heavenly, if you’ll excuse the pun.
