South Zeal, Okehampton, Devon
South Zeal is a traditional Devon village on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park; life is quiet here, except for when the annual Dartmoor Folk Festival is on, and there’s a good sense of community as with most moorland settlements. There’s a shop and two pubs (The Kings Arms and The Oxenham Arms), even a skate park, and right in the middle of the village, an ancient Guild chapel, which you don’t see many of these days. It’s an attractive little place with views of the moors and good walks, like the one to Cosdon Beacon, one of the highest points on Dartmoor, and part of the Tarka Trail along the River Taw to Belstone. Definitely worth a stop off for a walk and a pub lunch if you’re in the area.
