St Martin-in-the-Fields, London
Amidst the hustle and bustle of Trafalgar Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields is one of the world’s most famous parish churches with a spire that rises 59m from the floor. Go and have a look around; the church offers a peaceful respite from the crowds and the interiors are absolutely beautiful, blending magnificent historical features like the soaring pillars and ornate plasterwork with eye opening contemporary features.
There’s been a church on the site since medieval times but the basis of the architectural delight that stands there today was built in the 16th century by Henry VIII when it was literally ‘in the fields’ (now you know how the name came about). It’s so much more than a parish church as it’s renowned for providing social care as well as being a wonderful environment to worship in. They have a busy schedule of concerts and events throughout the year, and there’s also a café and a shop. If you’re planning a day in London shopping or sightseeing, pop St Martin-in-the-Fields on your list.
