St. Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst, New Forest, Hampshire
When you’re browsing around in Lyndhurst, go and have a nosey in this imposing red brick Gothic church at the top of the High Street; the 160ft tower looms above the landscape for miles around. Inside, it’s rather interesting and has some beautiful Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows designed by the likes of William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Charles Kempe, besides a well known fresco of the Wise and Foolish Virgins by Lord Frederick Leighton – the biblical characters are allegedly modelled on local people. Doing justice or getting your own back?
In the churchyard is the grave of Mrs Reginald Hargreaves – none other than Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.
