Stonehenge, Wiltshire
There is nowhere in the whole wide world like Stonehenge - you know, that mega stone circle standing ominously out in the fields, that you can see from the A303 en route from London to the West Country?
Well, go and see it for real, get yourself an amazing Neolithic experience at this world famous prehistoric site on Salisbury Plain. Marvel at the immensity of the stones rising out of the flat Wiltshire landscape and how they got there, and if you're feeling strong have a go at pulling a replica Sarsen stone. There are little Neolithic houses you can step inside to see how life was lived in those times, and in the Visitor Centre you can see over 250 ancient artefacts and the reconstructed face of a man who lived here over 5,500 years ago. Now that's what we call incredible!
You must go, you must, because then you can tell your friends about it and besides, it really is an absolute gem for anyone who likes history - and a great family experience. There's a cafe and a shop where you can buy a memento of your visit, perhaps a 'Stonehenge Rocks' T-shirt! The main thing to remember is that opening times vary throughout the year and advance booking is strongly recommended because entrance is by timed tickets only.
