The Candlelight Inn, Bishopswood, Somerset
Nestled snugly in the peaceful village of Bishopswood on the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, The Candlelight Inn is a 2AA Rosette, multiple award-winning country pub that dates back to the 17th century. Inside is certainly not your average country inn, but it’s lovely, and the ambience is notably inviting. It’s not lacking in character either, with eclectic décor, wooden floors, flint walls, and open fires to keep you toasty in the colder times of the year.
They have a big farm to table ethos here, serving food that’s made with seasonal and local ingredients. Some of it is grown in the garden at the back of the pub, and at the most, it won’t have come from more than 100 miles away. The menu is tapas and traditional pub food, the former being the likes of Salt & pepper squid with sweet chilli sauce, Chickpea falafel with beetroot hummus, and Grilled lamb skewers, and the latter, Fish & chips, Dartmoor Bistro burger, and Rosted vegetable & Quinoa salad. If you want to pop in for a pint there’s a good range of beers, wines and spirits, and locally produced cider.
If the sun is high in the sky, or it’s one of those warm, balmy evenings, go and sit in the pretty garden, just what you need after a good walk in the hills, around Otterhead Lakes or Bishopswood Meadows.
