The Candlelight Inn, Bishopswood, Somerset

Just off the A303, halfway up the hill in the peaceful village of Bishopswood, The Candlelight Inn gets 5 star reviews from the folk who go there to dine. This is certainly not your average pub grub type of place, it’s more one for the foodies, with a carefully curated menu that reflects the heritage that inspired the owners on their world travels.

They like to use top quality ingredients, sustainable and sourced as near to home as possible; it’s all put to the best possible use with a creative twist, cooking techniques and flavours from around the globe, so you’d be quite right to expect something different. For example, alongside the choice of locally reared meats on the Sunday roast menu there might be something like Braai’d Buck (venison) with Cape Malay spices.

The A La Carte menu lists temptations like Lamb Rump with baby gem, black olive and potato terrine, Monkfish tail with Cape Malay curry, mussels, and potato rosti, and Hispi cabbage with chermoula, peanut and kale crisp. Enjoy with sides of greens or salad, new potatoes or triple cooked chips as you wish.

Inside, The Candlelight Inn is rustic modern and actually, rather cosy, with log fires blazing on colder days. In the summer it’s nice to sit in the sunshine in the pretty garden at the side of the pub. If you’re staying nearby for a large group holiday or family celebration and you want a memorable dining experience, this is definitely one to try.
