The Crown Hotel, Exford, Exmoor, Somerset
The Crown Hotel is a 17th century coaching inn with a prime location in the lovely little village of Exford, more or less right in the middle of Exmoor National Park. The family who run The Crown do a splendid job of catering for the locals, for tourists and for those who come to Exmoor for the sport – shooting, hunting, fishing and riding. They serve jolly good homemade fare, which you can eat in the bar or lounge; there are seasonal specials from the head chef, and you can bet your life that most of the ingredients are sourced from within a few miles, with organic and free range riding high on the menu.
Start off with a Smoked salmon and fennel salad, or perhaps Homemade ham hock and smoked chicken terrine; move on to something like Confit of duck leg with butterbean cassoulet, or South West beef and Exmoor ale pie. Round it off with The Crowns Home Made Sticky Toffee Pudding or if you don’t have much of a sweet tooth, with South West farmhouse cheese and biscuits.
The ambience is perfect – plenty of rustic charm, friendly service, roaring log fires in the winter and somewhere to sit outside in the summer and watch the world go by.
Opening hours vary throughout the year.
