The Devonshire Arms, Long Sutton, Somerset
Once a hunting lodge, this Grade II country inn stands on the pretty village green at Long Sutton on the Somerset Levels. it's impressive, to say the least; chic contemporary styling, heritage colours on the walls, and wooden floors. Staff are friendly and the food is top notch, with a big emphasis on locally sourced produce. And it's dog friendly, which is a bonus.
In the warmer months it's nice to sit out the back beneath the wisteria; the little courtyard and the walled garden are equally idyllic, but there's something very relaxing about sitting out the front with a drink and watching the comings and goings. On the lunch menu are temptations such as confit duck leg with creamy mash, pickled red cabbage, greens and herb jus, and Ploughman's with local honey roast ham, award winning cheeses, chutney, gherkins, mixed salad and bread & butter. It's a popular haunt for Sunday lunch and there's a gorgeously finished private dining room for 14; book it if you have something worth celebrating.
