The Exmoor Pony Centre, Ashwick, Dulverton, Somerset
The Exmoor Pony Centre is run by a charity called the Moorland Mousie Trust, which works hard to promote and protect Exmoor Ponies, an endangered and rare breed. It’s not a huge place by any means – they have 20 permanent residents and they take in and rehome the foals that are removed from the moors during the pony herd gathering each year.
Go and meet the ponies, have a taster session riding in the covered arena, have a picnic outdoors in the sunshine or indoors in the Green Building where you can find out about the history of Exmoor ponies. Besides the taster riding sessions you can have a walk and a trot around the lanes or a longer trek on the moors, though bear in mind that all rides must be booked in advance and that they only take groups of up to 5 people. They also do pony parties and you can even adopt a pony.
The Exmoor Pony Centre is only 4 miles from Dulverton, and not far from Tarr Steps, so it’s easy to include your visit as part of a day out exploring Exmoor National Park.
