The Fountain Head, Branscombe, Devon
This 500 year old pub at the top of the hill in the little coastal village of Branscombe is just what you’d expect from somewhere that’s proud of the traditional ambience it retains; slate flags on the floor, stone walls, an open log fire, friendly service and decent home cooked food. You won’t find pool tables, big TV’s or juke boxes, it’s a place to sit and natter, play darts, cribbage or dominoes, and enjoy a quiet meal.
There’s sandwiches, toasties and Ploughman’s at lunchtime, as well as pub favourites like honey-roast ham, double egg and chips, local butcher’s sausages with mash, veg and onion gravy, and from the blackboard, fresh fish of the day. The evening menu is more fancy with homemade venison, vegetable and red wine pie with chips and veg, roast breast of chicken with ratatouille, mixed wild mushrooms, new potatoes & sweet red wine dressing, and roasted, marinated artichoke hearts & red peppers, sun-blushed tomatoes, fresh basil & mozzarella salad and warm ciabatta. It’s all home made and ingredients are the freshest, most locally sourced they can get their hands on.There’s a children’s menu, and if you’re going for Sunday roast make sure you book because it gets quite busy. It’s nice to sit outside of a summer evening and soak up the tranquillity with a pint of beer from the local brewery just down the road.
