The Great Western Railway Museum, Coleford, Gloucestershire
Railway buffs, or ferroequinologists, as we like to call them will be delighted when they pull up in the main car park at Coleford in Gloucestershire, because that’s where The Great Western Railway Museum is. If you didn’t know about it and trains just happen to ring your bell, that’s a very serendipitous moment indeed.
Wander along and you can see a restored 0-4-0 'Peckett' locomotive, a replica Victorian rail carriage, a working signal box and a Toad Brake van, amongst other things, all housed in one of the last few original railway buildings in the Forest of Dean. There’s a miniature train you can have a ride on with the kids, and there’s a shop where you can treat yourself to a little souvenir. Nice.
