The Haymaker Inn, Wadeford, near Chard, Somerset
The Haymaker Inn is a traditional country pub a couple of miles from the small Somerset town of Chard. If you're staying at Holemoor Stables you can walk here through the lanes, which is quite a nice thing to tie in with a Sunday roast (they do a cracking one here). The menu is homemade, honest pub food, it's good and you get plenty of it. Don't worry if you follow a special diet because that's no problem for them here; on the mains menu are all the classics like lasagne, burgers, ham egg and chips, and scampi and chips, but vegetarians and vegans do have more choice than you normally see in pubs. Out the back there's a beer garden, nice for when the sun has got his hat on; if that's not the case you can stay inside and keep warm by the fire. Big groups should always book ahead of course, and if it's free you might be able to have the skittle alley all to yourselves.
