The Lamb Inn, Axbridge, Somerset
Good pubs are getting harder to find these days, so all the more reason to go to The Lamb Inn. This traditional coaching inn dates back to 1480 and is easy to find, right in the heart of Axbridge, a pretty medieval town in Somerset, not far from Wookey Hole and Cheddar Gorge.
Step inside to the cosiness and charm you’d expect from a pub that’s this old – low ceilings with oak beams, hefty stone walls, lamplit corners, and open fireplaces ablaze in the winter months. There’s a dartboard, skittle alley and board games to keep you entertained; it’s the kind of place you can hunker down in if it’s raining outside, so settle in, make yourselves comfortable
You should have a bite to eat because the food is good, with a menu of pub classics and hearty wholesome seasonal dishes, all made using top quality local ingredients from trusted suppliers. If you’re only a little bit peckish choose something from the light bites, maybe a Roasted garlic and apricot scotch egg with apple remoulade and grain mustard dressing, or Smoked mackerel bruschetta with crème fraiche, horseradish, capers, cucumber and dill. Have a lunchtime sandwich and a bowl of chips to share, or if you need a belly full go for the English lamb burger with harissa ketchup, pink onions, feta and cucumber yoghurt, pickled chilli and skin-on fries. Maybe Tandoori chicken thighs with blackened sweetcorn, onion bhaji, coconut and mango yoghurt, or Hot-smoked Chalk Stream trout with Niçoise salad, golden-yolk egg and lemon dressing. If you come on a Sunday, you can tuck into an excellent roast.
Being in Somerset, it would be rude not to have a pint of the local cider or Butcombe beer; if that’s not your thing, sip a cocktail or a robust glass of red.
The first Saturday of the month is Breakfast Day, there are quiz nights, regular comedy nights and live music. Think serving the community and warmly welcoming visitors and that’s the kind of vibe you get here, just how it ought to be.
If you like the fresh air, sit out the front and watch the comings and goings, or find a bench in the leafy garden at the back.
