The Lighter Inn, Topsham, Devon
The Lighter Inn stands right on the quay at Topsham, facing the River Exe, with views that we don’t need to tell you about; suffice it to say, they are glorious. Outside there’s a big terrace for the summer, inside there are log fires for the winter. Interiors are modern-rustic interiors and the vibe is relaxed and friendly all round.
They’re open all day so you can call in for coffee and cake if you’re passing, or stop by for lunch. Food is everybody’s pub classics, all very hearty with a Home Comforts section that lists Mac & Cheese, Chilli Con Carne, Beer Battered Fish & Chips, and Chicken & Ham Hock Pie. If burgers are your thing there’s a choice of beef, chicken and fish and plant options, and sarnies are served until 5:00pm from Monday to Saturday, with Tuna Melt, Honey Roast Ham & Cheddar Toastie, and good old Egg & Cress among the temptations of a lighter lunch. Sunday you can almost feel the pace slow right down with people tucking into their roast dinner and getting so comfy they’re happy to linger.
It gets busy at the front of The Lighter Inn in the summer months, but stroll around Topsham and you’ll understand why; it’s such a lovely little place where the quiet streets are lined with old cottages and quirky buildings, and swans nest by the sheltered wall of the quay. Come on a warm evening after a walk around Bowling Green Marsh and watch the sunset over the estuary.
