The Martlet, Langford Budville, Nr Wellington, Somerset
The Martlet is a traditional village inn right in the middle of Langford Budville in Somerset; out the back there’s a beer garden where you can sit in the sunshine on warmer days, when it’s cold stay inside nice and toasty by the double-sided wood-burner. The ambience is lovely, with lots of character oozing from the thick stone walls, the flagstone floors and the chunky old beams hung with horse brasses.
You can eat in the light and airy restaurant or in the bar where it’s cosier; food is very good – all the pub favourites with a distinctive twist and some treats for the vegetarians, including a smoky barbecue lentil burger and sweet potato falafels. On Sundays they do an absolute smasher of a roast with meat from the local butchers, so book up and go fill your belly.
There’s a children’s menu too, dogs are welcome as long as they behave, and you can expect friendly service from a happy smiley team.
What’s a martlet? It’s a mythical bird in English heraldry, a bird that has no feet and therefore never roosts, so it’s always on the wing; rather a fitting analogy when you think about the continuous effort involved in continuous flying – and that put in by the people who run this place.
